Columbus Square Recreation Center
An inviting recreation building that blurs the edge between inside and outside by filling the interior space with natural daylight and allowing for visual interaction and transparency between spaces. Large windows, ground-faced block, stainless steel shingles and panels, and curved galvanized metal roofs gesture to old and young to come play.
Located in South Philadelphia at Columbus Square, which covers the city block between 12th and 13th Streets and Wharton and Reed Streets, this building has become a favorite meeting place for the neighborhood. The design enables staff to have a panoramic view of the playing fields, playground, and basketball courts, and optimizes visibility through the building. A large multi-purpose room for community meetings, after-school programs, and recreation classes, plus a small multipurpose room for computer and art classes, are positioned on either side of a generous sky-lit lobby space. The staff office has an information counter open to both the exterior and the interior, inviting the neighborhood to join in the activities.
